Welcome to Summer Riding Season

Welcome to the summer cycling season in Colorado!  We think that the snow has moved on and blue sky, sunny days perfect for riding have arrived.  There are more and more cyclists on the roads and trails each time that I ride, so now is the time to head out.

If the thought of getting started again is intimidating to you.  Take a deep breath and follow these easy steps.

Has your bike missed the daylight?  Here are a couple of items to check before heading out.  It is as easy as A,B,C.
A - Air - Do you have air in your tires?  If the tires are completely flat, fill them and allow them to sit for a bit to ensure that they hold air.  If they deflate again, it is likely that the tube needs to be replaced.
B - Brakes - Do you tires spin freely without the brakes applied and do they stop with the application of pressure?  Remember - Right is Rear!
C - Chainring/Cassette - Do the pedals spin properly and gears shift?
If you run into issues with any of the A,B,Cs, you may need the help of a professional to provide a quick tune and get you road/trail ready.  There are many great bicycle shops in Colorado and several mobile repair companies that will come right to your door.

Now that you are ready to roll, it is important to have proper safety equipment.
HELMET:  The most important item is a helmet.  Make sure it has a CPSC sticker and check the following:  Look at shell, liner, strap, buckle and rear stabilizer.  If you notice any damage or cracks, replace.
OPTIONAL ITEMS:  (not mandatory, but helpful) - sunglasses, sunscreen, identification, gloves, proper clothing, socks and shoes
NUTRITION:  Plan to bring at least one water bottle and a light snack
REPAIR KIT:  Flat tires are not unusual when cycling due to debris, rocks etc on the roads and trails.  Carry the proper size tube, CO2 cartridge & adaptor or air pump, tire levers.  (It is ok if you cannot change a tire, having supplies allows others to help)

Let’s ride!  It’s time to head out.  Remember as a cyclist, it is your responsibility to follow the rules of the road.  If you are looking for riding company, watch for posts on Women Bike Colorado as well as various groups as many group rides are available for all ability levels.  There are many rides throughout the summer for all ability levels too.  These are a great way to get out and explore.  Join the Denver Century Ride in June and Cycle the City - a fun way to see many of the sights in Downtown Denver.

The first step to getting out to ride is taking action.  Once you start to ride, the opportunities in Colorado are endless.  Grab a friend and your bike and head out.
